EUR - The Euro

Since its introduction, the European Central Bank has overseen the Euro, working with national central banks in the Eurozone to maintain price stability and financial security. Unlike many individual country currencies, the Euro's value is influenced by the collective economies of its member states. That’s why the ECB regularly monitors inflation, market trends, and global events to keep the Euro steady.

The Euro is a relatively new currency compared to others, but it has changed the world in a very short time. It was officially launched as an electronic currency on January 1, 1999, and physical banknotes and coins entered circulation on January 1, 2002. The Euro replaced national currencies like the German Mark, French Franc, and Italian Lira. Today, it’s the second most traded currency in the world after the US Dollar. ”

The Euro stands out in design, with banknotes featuring images of architectural styles from different periods in European history. And the coins display a shared design on one side and a country-specific image on the other—manifesting unity in the truest sense of the word. Moreover, the Euro is used outside the European Union in several territories and microstates, like Andorra, Montenegro, Kosovo, and San Marino, even though they are not part of the EU.

The Euro’s symbol, “€,” was inspired by the Greek letter epsilon (Є), a shoutout to Europe’s ancient heritage, combined with two parallel lines to portray stability. The official currency code, “EUR,” is used worldwide in banking and currency markets.
